The Tamil protest in Parliament Square which saw thousands of Pro Tamil supporter's, men, women and children peacefuly protesting has now drawn to an end on the 17th June 2009 after an epic 73 days. The protest directly opposite the Houses of Parliament was one of the longest country has seen. The protest was to draw attention to the fact that more than 20,000 Tamil civilians have been killed by the Sri Lankan army, this is more than three times the official figure, UN documents claim. The supporters continued to protest in support of friends, family and loved ones who have been killed in the conflict. The Sri Lankan authorities have claimed that the use of heavy weapons was suspended and a no-fire-zone established in the area where more than 100,000 Tamil men, women and children have been seeking shelter. However confidential UN Documents show as many as 7,000 civilians have died in the no-fire-zone. It has been reported that upto 1,000 civilians a day have been killed until the 19th May the day after the Tigers leader Velupillai Prabhakaran was killed. The Sri Lankan government has denied access to media and aid organisations.
